A Drum Corps Geek’s Analysis of the Importance of Allentown

Wow…here we are…one last major regional show, and then we’ll be in Indy next weekend. I thought some less geeky parents might appreciate a quick study on what’s on the line for us Saturday night in Allentown.

First…and most obvious, we are on the field head to head with both Boston Crusaders and Carolina Crown! Probably don’t need to tell anyone how important THAT is. Boston put up a 92.7 last night at their homeshow in Lawrence, MA. That’s the same number we WOULD have put up in Chester had the scores remained after the debacle.

But…there’s more to the Allentown show than just a head to head with the 4-5-6 group. Here’s why:

The scores from San Antonio, Atlanta, and Allentown are averaged to determine the performance order at DCI World Championships  Prelims in Indianapolis next weekend!

So… being a geek, I’ve done the math. What’s represented below is the amount a Corps would have to beat the Corps “in front of them” ( only on the average of San Antonio and Atlanta…no other shows) to change performance order in World Championships Prelims.

Bluecoats: 0.000
Blue Devils: 0.325
Santa Clara Vanguard: 0.925
Carolina Crown: 3.275
Boston Crusaders: 1.263
The Cavaliers: 1.075
Blue Knights: 5.388
Blue Stars: 0.588
The Cadets: 2.613
Mandarins: 2.300
Crossmen: 1.138
Phantom Regiment: 1.750
Spirit of Atlanta: 3.063
The Academy: 3.888
Colts: 0.788

So…regardless of the fact that we beat Boston in Winston Salem, we need to outscore them in Allentown by 1.075 points or more to change our performance order to 5th in the Prelims.

Now…it’s not that big of a deal if we don’t do that. If we’re performing right before them or right after them, judges won’t have a difficult time differentiating what they need to assign caption placement in Prelims. If we beat them in Prelims, then performance order changes for Semis, etc.

But…it surely would be nice to be in that 5th slot in Prelims so that we could potentially sneak up on Crown starting on Thursday and on through Saturday. It’s pretty rare these days to see a Corps move two positions between Thursday and Saturday night. And I’m still a firm believer we have the show and the kids to take 4th away from Crown.

So…when you watch either live or on Flo Saturday night, you’re not only crossing your fingers to beat Boston…but you’re crossing them to beat Boston by 1.075 points or more. That would put us in position to put a serious challenge on Crown in Indy.

And with that…I gotta go do the real job…not the geekazoid Drum Corps Analyst job. 🙂  If that made anyone’s head hurt…I apologize in advance!
